Tinnitus: The #1 VA Disability Claim
Tinnitus — ringing, buzzing, or hissing in the ears — is the most commonly claimed disability at the VA. Over 2.3 million veterans receive compensation for tinnitus.
How the VA Rates Tinnitus
Tinnitus is rated under Diagnostic Code 6260. There is only one possible rating:
10% — the maximum schedular rating for tinnitus. The VA considers tinnitus a single disability regardless of whether it affects one or both ears.
While 10% may seem low, tinnitus is valuable because:
- It's relatively easy to service-connect
- It often supports secondary conditions (anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, migraines)
- It contributes to your combined rating
Proving Service Connection
The VA needs three things:
- Current diagnosis — You report persistent ringing/buzzing to a doctor. Tinnitus is largely subjective — there's no objective test.
- In-service noise exposure — Military occupational specialties (MOS) with high noise exposure make this easier: infantry, artillery, aviation, engineering, armor. But even non-combat roles (generators, vehicles, weapons qualification) count.
- Nexus — Connection between current tinnitus and service. If you had noise exposure and report onset during or shortly after service, this is often straightforward.
Secondary Conditions from Tinnitus
Tinnitus can be the basis for secondary service-connection claims:
- Hearing loss — often paired with tinnitus
- Anxiety / depression — constant ringing causes emotional distress
- Sleep disturbance / insomnia — tinnitus interferes with sleep
- Migraines — some veterans develop headaches linked to tinnitus
- Meniere's disease — inner ear condition sometimes linked to tinnitus
Common Mistakes
- Not claiming tinnitus because "it's only 10%" — it's an easy win and unlocks secondary claims
- Saying you "got used to it" during C&P — this suggests it doesn't cause impairment
- Not documenting when the ringing started (during service is ideal)
- Forgetting to claim hearing loss alongside tinnitus
